| Proper clothing allows the face to dominate the portrait, with all other elements being secondary. Long sleeves should be worn to keep the eye from being drawn away from the face. Against a medium or dark background, colors that photograph best for a close-up portrait are medium to dark tones of green, brown, rust, wine, or blue. Keep in mind darker colors are more slimming. | |||||||||||||||||||

Tank tops may be very fashionable, but often make the subject look heavier and take the eye away from the face.
|
Stripes, plaids, checks or bold prints also draw the eye away from the face and do not photograph well.
|
Bright colors that don't compliment the skin, are too intense and overwhelm the face.

| Clothing Reminders
• Simplicity is the key when choosing clothing. Solid colors are best. Avoid large or bold patterns that draw attention away from the face. • Longsleeves are recommended. They cover more skin tones so that the face is the focal point. • Keep in mind when choosing outfits, to pick clothing you like and feel comfortable with. If you feel good you'll look good. • Dark colors are slimming, and lighter colors will widen. Keep that in mind if you are self-conscious about being heavy or too thin. • Necklines are important. A scoop or v-neck shape is best if your neck is short, or your face is full. A turtleneck or high neck garment is more flattering if your neck is longer or your face is narrow. • If you feel you must wear a tank top, consider putting a short sleeve shirt on over the top. Bare shoulders draw the eye away from the face. • Coordinate from head to toe. Shoes and socks may show in full length poses, as well as belts, jewelery, and other accessories. • If you like high-key portraits (white-on-white) bring a white or pale pastel outfit. • Black is a good choice for black-and-white portraits or for a dramatic look in color. |
